19.9.97 EA The Panel discussed the Administration's paper on the pilot scheme for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) taxis. The main purpose of the pilot scheme was to collect information on costs and maintenance of LPG taxis as well as to gain local operational experience to address the concerns of the transport trade and the public. 21.1.98 CM Hon Allen LEE moved a motion urging the Administration to expeditiously put in place a LPG taxi scheme and take the lead in promoting it, as well as establishing concessionary measures to encourage the participation of taxi operators, and extend such scheme to other vehicles. 16.10.98 PRESS The Administration launched a consultation document on the switch of all diesel taxis to LPG taxis so as to improve the air quality of Hong Kong. [Press release]

The Panels agreed that their Chairmen should write to the Secretary of Planning, Environment and Lands, requesting the Financial Secretary to explain the financial incentives to be provided for the implementation of the Scheme when introducing the Appropriation Bill in March 1999.

The Administration also issued a paper on the development of the proposal to extend emission tests to petrol and LPG vehicles as part of their annual inspection or road worthiness examination for such vehicles in 2000. [Paper]

16.6.00 FA FC approved a commitment of $725,520,000 for providing a one-off grant to encourage diesel taxi owners to replace their vehicles with LPG vehicles. [Paper]
