LegCo Panel on Transport visits Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link Northern Connection (with photos)

The Legislative Council ("LegCo") Panel on Transport conducted a visit to the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link (TM-CLKL) Northern Connection today (17 December) to better understand the latest development of the project before its commissioning on 27 December this year.

Members first received a briefing by Mr Chris WONG K P, Project Manager/ Major Works (Special Duties) of the Highways Department, on the project of the Northern Connection and the arrangements for its commissioning. Members then visited the South Portal and the lowest point of the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Tunnel to learn more about the innovative engineering solutions and the key features of the tunnel. One of the key features is the service gallery under the tunnel's carriageway where drainage pipes, fire mains, power supplies and control systems are installed, so that part of the daily maintenance works can be carried out at the same time during tunnel operation.

The TM-CLKL is the route between the Northwest New Territories and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), the Hong Kong International Airport and North Lantau and it comprises the Northern Connection and Southern Connection. The Northern Connection is 5.5 kilometres long, of which about 5 km is the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Tunnel, a subsea road tunnel. The Southern Connection connects the HZMB Hong Kong Port and North Lantau on viaducts, was opened to traffic in October 2018.

Members participating in the visit included the Panel Chairman, Hon Frankie YICK Chi-ming; Panel members Hon Mrs Regina IP LAU Suk-yee, Hon Michael TIEN Puk-sun, Hon YIU Si-wing, Hon POON Siu-ping, Ir Dr Hon LO Wai-kwok, Hon Kenneth LAU Ip-keung and Hon Tony TSE Wai-chuen; as well as non-Panel members Hon Jeffrey LAM Kin-fung, Hon WONG Ting-kwong, Hon Alice MAK Mei-kuen and Hon CHAN Chun-ying.
