3. Responding to members questions, the Assistant Commissioner for Labour (AC for L) advised that the proposed computer network system would facilitate efficient communication on vacancy information, and job-seekers could also conduct their own search for suitable vacancies through the self-operating terminals installed at the branch offices of the Local Employment Services. With the computer-aided job matching, the branch offices would be able to serve the job-seekers within 20 minutes of the appointment time instead of the current target of 30 minutes. The availability of more up-dated vacancy information on computer would also improve the chance of finding a suitable job for applicants. On the possibility of further reducing the waiting time for an appointment of in-depth counselling session, AC for L explained that this appointment system was only necessary for job seekers on the Job Matching Programme. As such counselling sessions involved in-depth analyses of the applicants needs by special placement officers, the proposed target of arranging an interview within four working days was considered reasonable having regard to the existing manpower resources.
4. In reply to a member, the Assistant Director of Information Technology Services advised that the proposed system would be capable of upgrading and communicating with employers through the Internet. Regular system reviews would be carried out to cater for future requirements, and depending on the scale of system modifications, additional provision might be required.
5. The Committee approved the proposal.
6. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 pm.
