The Clerk advised that the purpose of the meeting was to elect the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Committee, and that the election procedures had been circulated to members on 2 July 1998.
2. As members had no objection to the election procedures, the Clerk invited nominations for the Presiding Member. Mr Andrew WONG was nominated by Mr CHENG Kai-nam and seconded by Dr LEONG Che-hung. Mr WONG accepted the nomination.
3. There being no other nomination, Mr Andrew WONG was declared elected as the Presiding Member.
Election of Chairman
4. Mr Andrew WONG invited nominations for the chairmanship. Mr Ronald ARCULLI was nominated by Dr YEUNG Sum, and seconded by Dr Philip WONG. Mr ARCULLI accepted the nomination.
5. There being no other nomination, Mr ARCULLI was declared elected Chairman of the Finance Committee for the 1998-99 session.
Election of Deputy Chairman
6. Mr ARCULLI took the chair and called for nominations for deputy chairmanship. Mr CHAN Kam-lam was nominated by Mr David CHU and seconded by Mr James TIEN. Mr CHAN accepted the nomination.
7. There being no other nomination, Mr CHAN was declared elected Deputy Chairman of the Finance Committee for the 1998-99 session.
Dates of Next Meetings
8. The Chairman advised that the Committee would meet on 10, 17 and 31 July 1998. At the meeting on 10 July 1998, the Committee would consider two agenda items relating to the adoption of the Finance Committee Procedure and the setting up of the two subcommittees, namely, the Establishment Subcommittee and the Public Works Subcommittee. The meetings on 17 and 31 July 1998 would be for considering financial proposals from the Administration.
9. The Chairman further advised members that to enable the two subcommittees to meet on 15 July 1998 for election of the Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen, and on 22 July 1998 for considering financial proposals from the Administration, there was a need for members to signify membership for the two subcommittees by 11 July 1998. He urged members to join either one or both subcommittees as many proposals from the Administration were related to civil service establishment or public works issues.
10. There being no other business, the meeting ended at 2:55 pm.
