This research studies the mechanisms for handling torture claims in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Japan. It covers the lodging of torture claims, asylum hearing/interview, appeal and review procedures, humanitarian considerations to grant protection to applicants with the risk of torture, legal aid and other support, as well as relevant issues and concerns.

It covers (a) relevant international and domestic human rights legislation; (b) monitoring mechanisms of parliamentary and judicial institutions, and non-governmental organizations; and (c) monitoring mechanisms of specialized institutions, such as an independent human rights commission.
