The Legislative Council ("LegCo") Subcommittee on Refuse Collection and Resource Recovery conducted a visit to the Chinese University of Hong Kong ("CUHK") today (15 May) to obtain first-hand information on the refuse collection and resource recovery system of CUHK.

Members visited various waste management facilities in CUHK, including the facilities for food waste recycling, the Yard for Environmental Sustainability which encourages waste reuse and recycling, as well as the Shop on waste reduction operated by students in Central Campus.  Members then observed a demonstration on waste tracking and auditing to learn how CUHK uses radio frequency identification ("RFID") electronic tags to trace and record the amount of waste at the Marine Station Refuse Collection Point in Eastern Campus.

Members also attended a sharing session by CUHK representatives on their waste reduction programme and waste reduction requirements in CUHK's waste management contract.  Representatives of the Government were also invited to join the visit and Members took the opportunity to exchange views with relevant government officials on the policies of refuse collection and resource recovery.

Members participating in the visit included Subcommittee member Hon CHU Hoi-dick and non-Subcommittee member Hon HO Kai-ming.
