Prorogation of the Seventh Legislative Council

The Chief Executive has appointed 24 October 2025 as the date from which the Seventh Legislative Council shall stand prorogued. The nomination period for the 2025 Legislative Council general election has commenced on the same day. The purpose of prorogation is to prevent giving undue advantage to incumbent Members over other candidates during the election period, or an impression to that effect.

When the Council is prorogued, it ceases operation. All the bills not yet been passed and other unfinished business of the Council will lapse at the end of the term. In the event that an urgent meeting is to be convened during prorogation, any Members, notwithstanding their being nominated as a candidate for the upcoming Legislative Council general election, may attend and vote at the meeting in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Legislative Council.
