Since the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in July 1997, six Legislative Council elections have been held in 1998, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 respectively. Members of the Legislative Council were returned by geographical constituencies, functional constituencies, as well as the Election Committee in the 1998 and 2000 elections. In the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections, Members were returned by geographical constituencies and functional constituencies. The Table below provides the composition of the Legislative Councils since 1998.
