4. Penetration of Different Broadcasting Services

Out of a total of 2.29 million households in Hong Kong17, 2.25 million television households18 or 6.29 million viewers (aged 4 or above)19 were receiving the analogue broadcasting of the free-to-air television, representing a penetration rate of about 98.3%. As regards DTT services, the take-up rate was 15.6% of all households, i.e. about 351 000, at the end of July 2008.

The total number of subscribers of licensed pay television services continued to rise. The penetration of the licensed domestic pay television services in terms of the aggregate subscribers was 89.1% of the total households as at end of August 2008, an increase of nearly 11% over the previous year.

The year 2007-08 saw a significant increase in the number of total subscribers to the licensed pay television services from 1 840 000 to 2 040 000 (or 11% increase)20. The changes in the total number of subscribers from 2000 to 2008 are shown in Figure 13.
