2.3 Number of Broadcast Hours

The licensees broadcast about 55 689 hours of television programmes a week⁷ to the viewers in Hong Kong in August 2008, representing a 9.4% increase over 2007. ATV and TVB provided a total of 658 broadcast hours per week on the four analogue channels (2.2% increase over 2007) and 1 770 broadcast hours on the 12 digital channels as at August 2008 while the 293 channels of domestic pay television programme service licensees, 45 365 hours (5% increase over 2007). The 47 channels of non-domestic television programme service licensees receivable in Hong Kong provided a total of 7 896 hours (11.9% increase over 2007) per week. The weekly number of broadcast hours for sound broadcasting (including RTHK) was 2 184 (same as 2007). The respective weekly hours of different categories of licensees as at August 2008 are shown in Figure 5.
